Friday, May 19, marks National Asian & Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NAPIHAAD) 2017. The initiative was created in 2005 by the Banyan Tree Project, an HIV-related social marketing program that is part of API Wellness.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Asian and Pacific Islanders (A&PI) have the lowest HIV testing rates of all races and ethnicities in the Untied States. Nearly 67 percent of Asian Americans and 43 percent of Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islanders have never been tested for the virus. Further data show that when they test HIV positive, it is usually later in the disease’s progression.
To get the word out about HIV and to fight stigma, the Banyan Tree Project hosts a series of videos created by folks in the community who are living with the virus. Below are a few selections, but you can watch more here.
On the Banyan Tree website, you can also download resources including a digital tool kit (that includes fact sheets and social media banners) as well as posters in Chinese, Vietnamese and English.
The site also offers a quiz: Are You a Stigmatizer? Answer the questions and find out. You might be surprised!
