Thursday, May 19, marks National Asian & Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day 2016. This year’s theme is: “Saving face can’t make you safe. Talk about HIV.”

First started in 2005, the annual observational day is implemented by the Banyan Tree Project, a national social marketing campaign to raise awareness and combat HIV stigma in the Asian and Pacific Islander communities.

Nearly two thirds of Asians have never been tested for HIV, according to the Banyan Tree Project; the awareness day is one way to change that statistic.
